Key Areas of Responsibility
- The Apprentice Ink Technician will support the efficient operation of the Ink Laboratory by assisting with colour matching, ink formulation, stock control, and the supply of high quality inks to the production presses. Working under supervision, the apprentice will learn how to use specialist equipment and software to ensure inks are produced Right First Time (RFT) to minimise press downtime and support overall factory performance.
- Use the RK Proofer and IFS (Ink Formulation Software) to produce accurate colour matches for LED-curable inks.
- Complete colour proofs and adjustments to meet required colour standards and customer specifications.
- Ensure all inks issued to press meet RFT quality, reducing waste and minimising press delays.
- Issue inks to production presses in an organised and timely manner.
- Return, log, and process unused ink.
- Rework and blend inks to maintain efficient stock levels, reduce waste, and optimise ink inventory.
- Monitor and manage ink and varnish stock levels, escalating shortages where necessary.
- Use the company’s ERP system to track ink batches, record colour matches, update stock usage, and manage ink supply workflows.
- Ensure all formulations and ink movements are captured accurately for full traceability.
- Use microscope-based measurement systems and software to record anilox volumes and maintain database records.
- Follow all laboratory procedures, quality standards, and safety protocols.
- Maintain a clean, organised, and safe working environment in the ink lab.
- Assist in continuous improvement initiatives relating to ink performance, colour control, and press efficiency.
Key Requirements
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to achieving high-quality results.
- An interest in colour science or printing technology, with good attention to detail.
- Willingness to learn and develop technical skills in ink formulation and lab equipment.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Basic IT skills and willingness to learn ERP and laboratory software systems.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Highly motivated & eager to learn.
- Excellent communicator (written and verbal) at all times.
- Great attention to detail.
- Organised and calm under pressure.
- Friendly, approachable and flexible – a team player.
- Proactive, positive, enthusiastic - demonstrates “can do” attitude.
- Travel may be required therefore current, clean driving licence is an advantage but not essential.
- 5 GCSE’s grade 4 or above, including Maths & English.
- Computer literate – MS Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint.
