Optimum Skills are proud to be working closely with a number of established groundworks and civil engineering contractors, who are looking to recruit reliable Groundworks Apprentices across Gateshead, Newcastle and surrounding areas.
This opportunity is ideal for someone looking to start a career in groundworks and civil construction. You will join a site-based team, learning the practical skills required to work safely and effectively on live construction sites, while working towards a Level 2 Groundworker Apprenticeship Standard.
As part of this routeway, apprentices complete both on-site employment and off-the-job training, which is delivered through structured training blocks, practical workshops and assessments at our Gateshead centre, alongside real site experience.
Main Responsibilities:
- Excavation and Digging: Assisting with digging trenches, foundations and excavations for construction and civil engineering projects.
- Site Preparation: Helping prepare and clear construction sites, including removing debris, vegetation and obstructions.
- Foundations and Substructures: Supporting the installation of foundations, footings, concrete slabs and substructures.
- Drainage Installation: Assisting with the installation of drainage systems, trenches, pipes and associated works.
- Concrete Work: Helping mix, pour and finish concrete for footings, bases and structural elements.
- Paving and External Works: Assisting with paving, kerbing, flagging and external surfacing works.
- Levelling and Setting Out: Supporting basic levelling and surface preparation under supervision.
- Health & Safety: Working safely at all times, following site rules, method statements and PPE requirements.
- Material Handling: Loading, unloading and transporting materials such as aggregates, pipes, kerbs and tools.
- Tool and Equipment Use: Learning to use and maintain hand tools and small plant equipment safely.
- Teamwork: Working closely with experienced groundworkers, following instructions and supporting the wider site team.
- Housekeeping: Keeping work areas clean, tidy and organised.
As Your Apprenticeship Progresses, You Will:
- Take on more complex groundwork tasks under supervision
- Assist with drainage runs, kerb lines and external structures
- Develop competence across the Level 2 Groundworker Apprenticeship Standard
- Build the reliability, attitude and site awareness employers look for long term
Qualification Information:
- This role involves progression into a Level 2 Groundworker Apprenticeship, typically completed over 18–24 months
- Off-the-job training is delivered through a combination of:
- Practical workshops
- Classroom learning
- Assessments and reviews
- All off-the-job training is delivered at our Gateshead centre alongside site-based employment
