Optimum Skills are proud to be working closely with a number of bricklaying and building contractors, who are looking to recruit reliable Apprentice Bricklayers across Newcastle, Gateshead and surrounding areas.
This role offers the opportunity to become a qualified bricklayer while working on live construction sites. Apprentices will work alongside experienced tradespeople, developing practical bricklaying skills and supporting a range of building works, while working towards a Level 2 Bricklayer Apprenticeship Standard.
As part of the apprenticeship, you will complete both on-site employment and off-the-job training, which is delivered through structured training blocks, practical workshops and assessments at our Gateshead centre, alongside real site experience.
Main Duties Will Include:
- Assisting with brickwork and blockwork on new builds, extensions and renovation projects
- Supporting the construction of brick walls, garden walls and structural blockwork
- Assisting with repointing and repair work
- Helping with concrete bases and footings
- Supporting general building works including:
- Roof replacements
- Flat roofing works
- Guttering and fascia installation (as part of wider building projects)
- Preparing materials, mixing mortar by hand or with mechanical mixers
- Keeping the site clean, tidy and safe at all times
- Working safely and following all health and safety requirements
Bricklaying Skills You Will Learn:
- Measuring and setting out work areas
- Laying the first courses of bricks and damp-proof courses
- Laying bricks and blocks using mortar and a trowel
- Cutting, shaping and trimming bricks using hand and power tools
- Checking levels and alignment using spirit levels and plumb lines
- Working to drawings and instructions under supervision
Qualification Information:
- This role leads into a Level 2 Bricklayer Apprenticeship, typically completed over 18–24 months
- Apprentices complete off-the-job training as part of the apprenticeship, which includes:
- Practical bricklaying workshops
- Classroom learning
- Ongoing assessments and reviews
- All off-the-job training is delivered at our central facility in Gateshead, alongside site-based work
